Economics is the study of how we make choices. And we cannot make a choice without telling ourselves a story. Stories we tell about ourselves, about others and about the world provoke certain feelings in us, which in turn lead us to make a particular choice. There is even a field called narrative economics, which studies how stories drive the economy by influencing our decisions.
Stories we tell ourselves depend on our emotional state, which can be either disturbed, fearful, depressed or settled, calm, stable. Optimal decisions come when your mind and heart are able to communicate with each other. When they are disconnected our decisions bring more regrets and dissatisfaction.
The connection is possible when we are aware of our chronic negative emotional states and are able to process them in a constructive way. When chronic negative emotions are processed constructively, stories we tell ourselves change, which leads to choices that bring health, joy, fulfilling relationships and creativity.
