Love is art and love is work

“Love can be difficult, but it’s not mysterious. It’s just a skill that needs to be developed in the same way as cooking or playing the violin.”

– Erich Fromm from The Art of Loving

Many people believe that they just need to find the right “violin” and then they will love and feel loved. But getting a violin is not enough, learning to play violin requires developing skills. To develop any skill one needs to invest time, attention, organization, physical and emotional labor. It requires working through destructive behavior and communication patterns. It requires growing up and discovering a source of love within self. It requires healing of the family system of origin, not fixing it, but healing it within your own inner world. It requires giving psychological birth to self.

Love is art and love is work.
